Obituary of Jack Harold Herbert

HERBERT - Jack Harold - Previously of St. Thomas, born August 7, 1927 in his family home, Jack passed away peacefully with his loving wife and family at his side at the University Hospital, London on Friday, January 20th, 2017 in his 90th year. Beloved husband of Marlene Herbert (nee Walters) and the late Eileen Herbert (2010). Jack is survived by his children Louise Rybarsky (Sam) of St. Thomas, Martin Herbert (late Lillian) of Port Stanley, Edward Herbert (Ida) of Mission, BC, Jackilene Nichols (Everett) of Fingal and by step children Mark Dawson (Debi) of Kelowna B.C. and Scott Dawson (Fowzia) of Calgary, A.B. Jack will be greatly missed by 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Predeceased by 4 brothers and 4 sisters. During WWII, Jack worked as a brakeman for the New York Central Railroad. After the war ended and everyone came back to work and shifts became scarce so Jack moved his career from the railroad to Metcalfe Shoe Factory in St. Thomas. One of Jack’s passions was singing and traveling with the St. Thomas youth choir. In 1955 he moved to West Lorne where he took a supervisory position at another plant for Metcalfe Shoe Factory. Upon its closure Jack returned to St. Thomas where he found employment at Clark Equipment as a purchasing agent. Jack retired in 1985. With retirement, Jack and his wife Marlene purchased a motorhome and did what they loved to do and traveled around the United States and Canada. Jack’s greatest enjoyment was his family. One of his fondest memories was the family BBQ’s and Christmas gatherings. Visitation will be held at the Shawn Jackson Funeral Home 31 Elgin Street, St. Thomas (519-631-0570) on Thursday, January 26th, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon. The funeral service will be held in the chapel at 12 noon. Interment to be held at a later date.
