Joey was an amazing friend for over 42 years. We moved into our new house in Ficksburg, in Visser Street, in 1980, and I had my last baby soon after that.
I was new to the town, and very unhappy at our relocation from my home province of KZN to Vernon’s home province of the Free State, which was foreign to me.
Very quickly, our kids discovered that there were other children in the street and they began playing together. It didn’t take long for us mums to meet up and get to know one another.
I discovered I had an amazing neighbour who took me under her wing and in no time I had settled in happily and we had become firm friends. I loved her kids and she loved mine.
We used to get together with our other neighbour, Meisie, and have baking days where masses of sausage rolls and those wonderful “Joey biscuits” were turned out, while all our kids played happily together.
We attended each others children’s birthday parties and visited each others homes to watch videos together.
I was devastated when Joey and family left Ficksburg, but we kept in touch through the years and whenever we called one another, it was as if we still lived just down the street. My friendship with her changed my attitude towards Ficksburg and made me realise that it was the best thing that could have happened to me.
I only saw her twice after she emigrated, but it was as if she had never left.
I will really miss her lovely warm nature and our calls. She left this world far too soon. Rest In Peace my Dear Friend.

Good bye, Tannie Joey, I will always treasure the time that I had with you like gold, you will be forever in my heart.
I’m going to miss you! Thank you for all you did for me. You made such a big impact in my life, always kind and warm with a sincere interest. I learned a lot from you and I’m going to miss our long chats!! You always had good advice when I needed it.
You were positive about life even when you went through terrible times with pain and heartache. Always concerned about others and their wellbeing. You were a fun-loving lady with the best laugh. You had a remarkable life but left too soon.
We cherish the times we spent together. Our thoughts and hearts go out to our cousins and their families, although you live so far you are all still close to our hearts.

Tannie Joey, you and your family came into my life in 1991. What a privilage and joy it has been. You became a second mommy to me. Your laugh was contageous, your love and care knew no boundries. Johanna is a very important person in my life and my heart is full of a lifetime of happy memories. I grew up in her care and benefitted from her caring and fun-loving spirit. Her sunny outlook changed everything, like when she informed my parents that my babbling as a baby was me “learning Afrikaans.” I felt like family to her, and even after graduating from her daycare she treated me like one of her grandchildren. Optimist and resilient, Johanna’s laugh could fill a room and she made every holiday, birthday & gathering special. I am so grateful to have known and loved her. How lucky we all are that Johanna shared her light with us.

Johanna and her family were some of the first people I got to know when I moved to Chatham. Not only was she generous with the love she gave her family, but also spread it out like a warm blanket to strays like me. I met Johanna after moving to St Thomas a few years ago. She lived around the corner and the last couple yrs I was blessed to spend some time with her. I teased her when we were trying to figure out a time to go to lunch that she had so many friends and her schedule was quite full, in fact we were just at the theatre last Wednesday. Johanna was a very caring women who treated everyone with care and respect. She lived her best life right to the end. I’ll miss here terribly.

Though we met in South Africa I really got to know Joey after she and her family moved to Canada. I always admired her honesty and courage. She fought some demons along the way but her over arching love for family and friends was her super-power. I will always remember the lessons she didn’t know she taught me - right up to my recent visit with her in October. Meeting her “in-laws” and the grandchildren I had seen growing up on social media was affirmation of her legacy and I know they will all miss having her in their lives. Having had her for this long is special and the fond memories and daughter will be with you always. Rest in peace dear friend, I am happy we have a new shining star up above.

My fondest memories of Johanna are when she was with our children. There is no one more loving and passionate than Johanna. She was our very first babysitter for Eric, my parent’s neighbour, and she was simply the best. She got me through the toughest part of my life when I lost my Mom and I’ll never forget it. Her hugs, motherly advice and frankly just being “her” was invaluable to me.
Brian, Tanya, Jonathan and William you are her legacy and she will always be a part of each of you. She loved each of you more than life itself. Wishing you all peace.

I had the amazing opportunity to meet Johanna when she came to work at Marks in Wallaceburg.
It was not long before I learned what a devoted mother she was and that I would gain a truly wonderful friend.
She was without a doubt one of the strongest and most interesting women I had ever met.
Her devotion to her friends was also second to none and I only wish I had a few more years to experience that pleasure.

The enormous impact my beloved ’Hannah had on me was profound. Her sense of family, and total dedication to parenting still guides me. She was always deeply kind, profoundly forgiving, generously giving, and infectiously positive. She showed us all, over and over again, how to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, take a deep breath and move on. She fiercely loved her family, and bragged about how amazing you all are, every time we got together. We are all better people because of who she was, and I am humbled that she was a part of my world. There are so many memories we have shared since our children met and fell in love. My most treasured would be our time together on the cruise where Brian proposed to Mandi. We had a lot of laughs during the family Christmas/birthday celebrations, and shared many glasses of wine over the years.
